Day 10: May 29, 2025
Today was our second day in Kangnung. After checking out of the Gangneung Seongyojang House, we went to our first stop of the day at the Gyeongpo Thorn Practice Center of an Eco-Tourism presentation. We were led around the park learning about its historical significance to the coastal community and how it is utilized today as a relaxing recreational spaces and spot for growing lotus flowers. I really enjoyed learning about the coastal brackish river, as well as the various native plants growing alongside it. It was nice to see how a mixture of modern and past outdoor features were utilized in the design of the landscape. After our tour we ate lunch at one of the local markets and then went on a beautiful nature walk along the coastline. The Jeongdong-Simgok Badabuchae-gil walking trail provided a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean, showing where the mountains meet the sea. As I walked I saw countless ships, beautiful sea grass reefs along large rocks, and tall mountainsides. This was definitely a highlight and one of my favorite places to visit on the trip. After our walk, we took the bullet train back to Seoul.

Blog 8 Theme: Coastal Resturants and Markets.
Both days in Kangnung allowed me to see some differences and similarities in the way food is used to draw in people to purchase. One of the most distinctive aspects of the restaurants is the display of live seafood on the outside of restaurants. Many features had tanks with various sea animals that were freshly served upon order. This was a very interesting marketing strategy that showed how fresh and locally sourced the food being served was. I think this is very important to see as it shows the local fishing industry is strong and well supported by locals and visitors. I also visited a local market where fresh uncooked seafood was sold. As I’ve said before, having fresh foods from nearby sources is very beneficial for health and economic wellbeing.
